Director of Stewardship Position Description:
The Director of Stewardship works to build T3C’s capacity for land stewardship and develops meaningful connections and community partnerships with individuals and organizations throughout our community for advancing conservation objectives. The Director of Stewardship works closely with the staff team and the associated committees on the development and implementation of an annual work plan for T3C’s land stewardship and volunteer engagement objectives. The Director also coordinates with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to identify and articulate T3C’s strategic land management priorities and build relationships with Town officials and a number of non-profit organizations, and State organizations, and community partners. The Director of Stewardship reports to the Executive Director who supervises their work.
Position responsibilities include planning and coordinating stewardship and volunteer engagement activities related to Stewardship programs, collaborative work with community partners, property monitoring, and habitat improvement initiatives.
Core Responsibilities:
- Develop recommendations and implement habitat improvement and long-range land management plans and performance measures for T3C parcels to ensure that public access areas are well maintained and that conservation values are protected. Supports habitat improvement and long-range planning for select Town-owned conservation parcels.
- Work independently and with contractors and volunteers as necessary to complete land management, public access improvements, and habitat improvement projects on conservation lands. Coordinate with Executive Director to ensure that local and state permitting and regulatory approvals are met for all land stewardship projects.
- Develop recommendations and act as a liaison for T3C’s Stewardship Committee and related subcommittees. Coordinate T3C special events and projects such as property clean-ups, invasive plant removal, and habitat improvement projects.
- Engage with the Executive Director and Board of Directors for long range planning for capital improvements for the T3C’s Headquarters property (HQ) and fee-owned properties. Develop recommendations and plan for facilities maintenance for the HQ.
- Evaluate needs for accessibility and signage and implement improvements as necessary to enhance the user experience for recreational access and inclusivity while protecting sensitive areas.
- Recruit a diverse group of volunteers and provide guidance, motivation, and training as necessary to orient volunteers to T3C’s operations and mission. Work with T3C’s team to define volunteer support roles needed for a variety of program areas, special projects, and events.
- Oversee T3C’s volunteer land stewardship program and provide direction as appropriate for achieving annual stewardship obligations for conservation restrictions, and stewardship objectives for fee-owned properties, and applicable Town owned properties.
- Identify, secure, and supervise any AmeriCorps service members needed to fulfill T3C’s mission including group service projects and full-time supervision of two full-time service members.
- Engage with the Executive Director and Board of Directors in strategic planning for land stewardship and volunteer engagement priorities as well as the organizational strategic planning process. Develop an annual work plan to meet goals outlined in strategic plan.
- Provide grant writing support for stewardship and volunteer engagement initiatives.
- Additional responsibilities on an as needed basis as may be required to fulfill T3C’s mission of land preservation and conservation.
- Identify, secure, and supervise any AmeriCorps service members needed to fulfill T3C’s mission including group service projects and full-time supervision of two full-time service members.
The Director of Stewardship job responsibilities require:
- Proficiency and working knowledge of GIS, GPS, and Microsoft Office.
- An understanding of conservation restrictions.
- General knowledge of local flora and fauna, with a focus on invasive plant species identification.
- The ability to interpret maps, surveys, and other field documentation.
- Training and experience in safely using motorized maintenance equipment, such as chainsaws and weed whackers.
- Performing field work in a variety of conditions and effectiveness in organizing volunteers and experience with stewardship and land protection practices
- The ability to work positively with the public to promote conservation goals and to build a diverse membership and volunteer base.
- Strategic and creative thinking and the ability to effectively build consensus and support for volunteer and community engagement priorities.
- The ability to be sensitive to the diverse needs and successfully engage all groups in our community.
- Effectiveness in building and maintaining partnerships with Town government and with non-profit organizations to leverage the effectiveness and reach of T3C’s Stewardship programs.
- The ability to prioritize and implement invasive plant management projects.
- The ability to visually see and physically traverse land parcels and properties for the purpose of obtaining information on current conditions, including land that may not have trail access and land with rough, steep, or heavily vegetated terrain.
- The ability to work independently and to collaborate with others while juggling multiple projects and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- A Bachelor’s degree and Land Trust experience or similar experience in environmental organizations.
Hours: Average of 40 hours per week, occasional weekend work and evening meetings will be required.
Salary commensurate with experience.
