Ice House Pond Frontage

About Ice House Pond Frontage

Address: 390 Sippewissett Rd, Falmouth, MA 02540

A corner lot on the shore of Ice House, or Miles, Pond in Sippewissett was one of the first town land purchases recommended by The 300 Committee in 1986.The value of the acquisition is the public access it provides to the seven-acre pond for swimming, fishing, canoeing, or in winter, ice skating.

The far side of the pond meets the southwestern corner of Beebe Woods.

The stone remnants of an ice house used by Sam Cahoon for his popular fish market in Woods Hole can still be seen at the edge of the paved parking area. In 1933, according to The Book of Falmouth, he installed ice-making machinery. Neighbors didn’t like the noise it made and pointed out the land was zoned for residential, not industrial, use. Sam Cahoon’s supporters in Woods Hole were in favor of changing the zoning, but despite a large turnout at town meeting in his favor, the zoning initiative failed.

Access to the pond is on a short paved entryway on Sippewissett Road next to McCallum Drive. A path leads down to the water. Although there is no beach, swimmers can reach the water down a stone embankment around the corner on McCallum Drive.
