About Herring River Marsh
Protecting herring runs and access to the water were the primary reasons the town acquired numerous small parcels of land in the 1960s. Herring River Marsh, which flows into Buzzards Bay at Old Silver Beach, was acquired in 1963 and 1964, when the town bought or received as gifts three parcels comprising 6.6 acres.
Access is from the Wing Pond conservation area and connecting paths at Bourne Farm. The herring run at Wing Pond and a dirt causeway in the woods offer narrow but beautiful vistas of the marsh.
